Toney Leads Flames Past Howard

Aggressive Flames Force 50 Missed Shots

Taylor Toney's season high 18 points led four Flames in double figures, and UIC (3-7) shot over 48% in the second half to lock up their first road win of the season, 70-63 over Howard (2-8) in Washington, DC.  Toney scored 15 of her points in the second half when UIC responded to every Bison charge and extended their lead in crunch time.

The Flames took a lead into halftime for just the third time this year.  After Howard erased a six point deficit and tied the game at 23, UIC got a spark from Terri Bender, who assisted on a three-pointer and made a jumper of her own.  The Flames had reclaimed a 30-27 advantage at the break.

Brittany Byrd came away with four steals in a first half that saw a combined 31 turnovers.  Though the teams were virtually tied in that category (16 for UIC; 15 for Howard), the Bison scored 15 points off of turnovers to just 5 for UIC.

The Bison took control of the game early in the third quarter, racing out to a 37-35 lead.  But the Flames righted the ship and put together a 13-5 run of their own thanks to six quick points from Toney and a blistering 57% performance from the floor in the period.  UIC's decision to emphasize getting the ball to the rim paid off, as they logged 10 points in the paint in the third quarter.

Howard would close the gap to five points a couple of times early in the fourth quarter, but each time the Flames responded.  The lead got as large as 12 points and the Bison never seriously threatened down the stretch.

Byrd had 16 points and made three of six 3-pointers.  Melita Emanuel-Carr had 12, and Tyra Carlsten-Handberg scored 11.  Terri Bender had a season high seven assists.  Toney and Carlsten-Handberg each had 8 rebounds.  Te'Shya Heslip led everyone with 19 points for the Bison, but missed all seven of her 3-point attempts.

The game was a three point shooting contest early.  12 of the first 14 combined points came on triples.  UIC made 5 of 12 (41.7%) of their three-pointers in the first 20 minutes, following a 54% effort in the first half of their last game against Virginia.  The Bison made two of their first five three pointers but then cooled off, going 1-for-10 to finish the half.

UIC held Howard to 30.6% from the floor, but the Bison stayed in the game thanks to 27 offensive rebounds and 11 second chance points.  Imani Bryant was a one woman wrecking crew on the glass.  She snagged 12 offensive rebounds, which by itself would have set the high water mark for an opponent this season.  Her 17 total rebounds were the most by a UIC opponent since Central Michigan's Reyna Frost had the same number last November 27.

The win was UIC's first away from home since February 11.  It snapped a six game losing streak and seven game drought on the road dating to last season.

UIC will return home to face Bradley in the final game before Horizon League play begins.  The Flames and Braves will tip off at 1:00 pm on Thursday afternoon.
