SPOKANE, Wash. – The UIC men's soccer team (0-0-1) kicked off its regular season Friday with a 1-1 double overtime draw against San Diego State (0-0-1) during the first day of competition at the Gonzaga Tournament at Luger Field.
Max Todd put the Flames on the board with a goal in the 13th minute.
UIC was held to nine shots in the match and had four reach on goal, while SDSU took 13 attempts with six on goal. Todd and
Oscar Gonzalez each put up two shots and had at least one shot on goal in addition to
Cristian Sanchez.
Andrew Putna played the complete game in goal and made five saves.
Both sides were limited in scoring opportunities from the start as the first half presented the Aztecs with six attempts, forcing Putna to make four saves, and the Flames with two shots.
In the 13th minute of action, UIC drew a foul from 30 yards out, setting up a free kick. Todd stepped up and drilled the ball into the upper left corner to put the Flames up 1-0.
Mike Jimenez took UIC's other shot in the half in the 28th minute with the attempt sailing high.
The Flames came out with a quick attempt in the second half as Todd put a shot on goal three minutes in. However, SDSU's AJ Vergara evened the score at 1-1 in the 53rd minute when he shot the ball from six yards out.
The teams from then on went back and forth, with Gonzalez recording UIC's third shot on goal of the game in the 62nd minute.
Albert Arabik followed with an attempt two minutes later that was blocked, as Gonzalez got off another shot in the 72nd minute that was deflected.
At the 82nd mark, Sanchez drew a chance that resulted in a save.
Dimitris Strantzalis earned the last attempt with a shot sent high in the final 90 seconds.
Only one shot was offered for UIC in overtime as
Abel Guzman sent a shot high off a corner kick in the 101st minute, while the Aztecs took the last attempt that was blocked in the final seconds.
The Flames are back at Luger Field to close out the tournament Sunday with a 5:30 p.m. CT matchup against host Gonzaga.
