CHICAGO -- Ruvanna Campbell played her last game in a UIC uniform in March, but the Chicago native has not put away her sneakers just yet. The Horizon League's all-time leading rebounder has signed a professional contract to continue her basketball career with Hapoel Petah Tivka. The club competes in the Israel-D1 League.
"I figured basketball woud take me somewhere just because I work hard," Campbell told Justin Breen of
DNAInfo.com recently. "After college, I knew it wasn't goung to be it."
Campbell set the UIC and Horizon League career rebounding records with 1,287. She also ended her days as a Flame as the program's second-leading scorer with 1,671 points, and ranked fourth all-time with 142 blocked shots. The 2015 Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year registered an eye-popping 70 double-doubles during her career, including 22 as a senior. The latter ranked her fifth in the entire NCAA last season.
During her stint under head coach
Regina Miller, Campbell was a three-time All-Horizon League First Team selection and a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. She was also named MVP of the 2014 Women's Basketball Invitational as she helped UIC post a program-record 26 wins and the first postseason championship in program history.
In addition to putting in countless hours of hard work on the court, Campbell attacked her studies with same relentless effort. In May, Campbell graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a bachelor's degree in criminology law and justice. She told
DNAInfo.com that she hopes to purse a career as a probation officer after her playing days, whenever that may be.
