UIC, along with the newest member of its 1,000 point club, will look to snap a nine game losing streak and capture their first win in Horizon League play when they welcome Northern Kentucky (6-13, 2-5 HL) to the UIC Pavilion for a 3:00 pm contest Sunday afternoon. The Flames enter action with a 3-16 overall record, 0-8 in conference play.
In Friday's game against Wright State,
Terri Bender scored the 1,000
th point of her career in the Flames' 73-54 loss. She also snagged her 400
th rebound, putting her on the edge of becoming just the fourth player in UIC history to accumulate 1,000 points, 400 assists, 400 rebounds, and 250 steals. She needs six steals to round out the quartet of milestones.
The Flames played with a team-wide intensity throughout the first half.
Gabryelle Johnson, playing in her first game after missing five in a row, drew four charges. The team had five steals and three blocked shots. They made three of seven three pointers and out-rebounded WSU 21-17. But Wright State took their own intensity up a few notches after halftime to take the lead and eventually hand UIC its first loss after leading at halftime.
Brittany Byrd nearly had her third straight double-double, pairing 18 points with nine rebounds before fouling out in the third quarter. Her fifth foul only added fuel to Wright State's dominant performance in that period, as the Raiders turned a two point halftime deficit into a 10 point lead. UIC committed 10 turnovers in the third, and a conference season high 30 in the game, leading to 33 Wright State points. That represented a season high against the Flames.
It was the ninth straight loss for UIC, matching their longest losing streak since 1999 when the team lost nine in a row from January 14 to February 11. The Flames have lost 14 consecutive conference games dating to last season.
Northern Kentucky will roll into Chicago following a 70-55 win at Valparaiso, which kept the Crusaders winless in Horizon League play and gave the Norse their first road win of the season. Mikayla Terry scored 21 points, and Rebecca Lyttle had her second double-double in as many games with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The offensive output got NKU out of the league basement in total offense, though they still are 9
th with just 58.0 points per conference game.
UIC has committed 20 or more turnovers in five of eight conference contests. They will look to reverse that trend against a Norse squad that has had its own difficulties taking care of the basketball. Northern Kentucky is last in the league with a -6.2 turnover margin and has not committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in any conference game.
The history between the programs is a brief one. Northern Kentucky joined the Horizon League last year, and the teams had never met before becoming conference mates. The Norse swept the season series 2-0 last season, meaning UIC can get its first ever win over them Sunday afternoon.
Live coverage will be available on ESPN3, and live stats will be provided on UICFlames.com (see blue box above for links). The game is the second of five in a row at home, marking the longest homestand of the season for UIC.
