Tyra Carlsten-Handberg (Stockholm, Sweden) was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today. The honor is Carlsten-Handberg's first, and the first weekly accolade for the Flames this season.
Carlsten-Handberg turned in an 18 point performance against Valparaiso on Saturday, setting a new career high. She made three of six three-pointers, and also scored inside on a variety of post moves. She added five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. She is UIC's leader in blocked shots.
Defensively, she made post entries difficult for the Crusaders and helped hold Dani Franklin, the conference's leading scorer, to 4-of-16 shooting.
Carlsten-Handberg had previously received honorable mention for the freshman of the week award on two occasions earlier this season. Those came the weeks of Nov. 14 and Nov. 28.
The achievement is the first such honor for UIC since
Terri Bender won the conference's Newcomer of the Week award on Jan. 14, 2013.
The Flames will continue their season-long homestand with games against Cleveland State and Youngstown State this Thursday and Saturday.
