Flames Safari to Fort Wayne

Mastodon Hunt Begins Tuesday Morning

UIC (1-1) will return to action in their first road test of the 2017-18 season, as they cross the Indiana border for a tilt with Fort Wayne (1-3).  It will be an early wake-up call, as tipoff will go up at 10:00 am Central.  At stake for the Flames is a 2-1 or better mark in the season's first three games for the fifth time in seven years under Regina Miller.

Starting Five
  • Gabryelle Johnson posted her first career double-double in the Flames' last game, a 76-63 loss to Jackson State on Thursday.  She scored 13 points and grabbed 18 rebounds.  Ten of her caroms were on the offensive glass.
  • Johnson became the first Flame to get at least 10 offensive rebounds in a game since Feb. 10, 2016, when Ruvanna Campbell had 10.
  • Two Flames are among the Horizon League's top 10 scorers.  Taylor Toney, with 19.0 points per game, is fourth, and Brittany Byrd, whose game high 20 points against Jackson State pushed her season average to 13.5, is seventh.
  • Toney leads the conference in steals (4.0 per game), Johnson leads in rebounds, (14.5 per contest), and Teodora Zagorac is the Horizon League's top shooter.  She has missed just one shot this season and is 8-9 (.889) overall.
  • UIC has shot over 41% in each game so far, and is at .424 for the season.  All of their wins over the last season-plus have come when they shot over 40%.
Last Time Out
  • The Flames could not hang on to the ball consistently in their 76-63 loss to Jackson State Thursday.
  • UIC committed 33 turnovers, which led to 44 Tiger points.  Though the Flames forced more JSU turnovers (21) than they allowed assists (15), they were outscored by 28 in the off-turnover column.
  • The Flames got to the free throw line but did not have success there, making just 17 of 37 foul shots.
  • Three Flames (Byrd, Toney, Johnson) were in double figures.
Mastodon Memos
  • Fort Wayne enters on a two game losing streak.  They defeated Loyola Nov. 12, but lost to Belmont and Findlay since. In the Findlay game Saturday, a 75-55 loss, the Mastodons allowed a .529 shooting percentage and made just 35% of their own shots.
  • Jaelencia Williams, the team's leading scorer on the season, led Fort Wayne with 12 points against Findlay. Williams also leads the squad in rebounding this year, averaging 7.5 boards to go with her 10.8 points.
  • Fort Wayne got their first-ever win against the Flames in last year's meeting at the Flames Athletic Center, 61-55. UIC was 3-0 against Fort Wayne prior to that game, including a win in the first round of the 2014 WBI.
  • Taylor Toney had a game high 17 points last season, and Gabryelle Johnson tied for team high honors with 5 rebounds.
  • This will be one of two opportunities the Flames will have this season to avenge a non-conference loss from last year.
