Flames Return Home to Welcome Santa Clara

Team Looks to Build on Strong Performance at Fort Wayne

The UIC Flames (2-1) return to the UIC Pavilion for an intersectional showdown with Santa Clara (1-3) Saturday at 1:00 pm.  The Flames will be shooting for back-to-back wins for the first time since Jan. 23-30, 2016.

Starting Five
  • Taylor Toney set a program record for free throws without a miss by going 12-for-12 in the Flames' last game Tuesday.
  • Toney (26 points) and Brittany Byrd (21 points) each set new career scoring highs on Tuesday as well.  It was the first time the Flames had two 20-point scorers in the same game since Jan. 9, 2016.
  • After carrying a team-wide .462 free throw percentage into Tuesday's contest, the Flames shot .733 (22-30) as a squad against Fort Wayne.
  • UIC's opponents have committed more turnovers than assists in every game of the season so far.
  • Toney is in the Horizon League's top 10 in scoring (third), rebounding (eighth), assists (seventh), steals (first), assist to turnover ratio (tenth), and free throw percentage (seventh).  Gabryelle Johnson leads the conference in rebounding.  Teodora Zagorac is tops in shooting percentage.
Last Time Out
  • UIC ended a nine game road losing streak with a 67-51 win over Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
  • The Flames held a 23-8 edge in points off turnovers, capitalizing on 17 Mastodon miscues while turning the ball over a season-low eight times.
  • Toney and Byrd did the heavy lifting for UIC, combining for 47 points and 17 rebounds.  Gabryelle Johnson added five offensive rebounds and six overall.
  • Byrd earned consecutive trips to the free throw line, where she made three of four shots, once the Mastodons closed to within six points early in the fourth quarter.  Toney converted back-to-back three point plays to effectively end the game.
Bronco Bits
  • Santa Clara arrived in Chicago earlier this week for a Wednesday contest at Northwestern.
  • Despite a 16-2 run that brought the Broncos within five points midway through the fourth quarter, they could not complete the comeback and fell 57-47.
  • Ashlyn Herlihy led Santa Clara with 16 points.  Alexus Brigham added 12, and Morgan McGwire contributed a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).
  • The Broncos are shooting 38.2% as a team, a number that fell after they made just 27.8% of their shots against Northwestern.
  • Santa Clara has been held under 50 points in their last two games.
