UIC Gears Up to Play Cleveland State Saturday

Flames looks to secure first regular-season sweep of Vikings since 2005

CHICAGO - UIC, seeking to put together its second three-game winning streak of the season, will look to get the job done on Saturday, Feb. 11, when it hosts the Cleveland State Vikings inside the UIC Pavilion at 3 p.m. CT. The Flames are also attempting to complete their first regular-season sweep of CSU since the 2004-05 season after winning the first meeting in Cleveland, 59-54, on Jan. 12.

In the first meeting just less than a month ago, UIC (13-12, 6-6 Horizon League) shot nearly 61 percent from the field in the second half, and 67 percent from beyond the arc to turn a three-point halftime deficit into a five-point win on the road. The Flames received 11 points off the bench from both Dominique Matthews and Clint Robinson, and Godwin Boahen tallied all 10 of his points in the second half to help UIC to victory against CSU inside the Wolstein Center for the first time since Dec. 27, 2006. That victory was the start of UIC's first three-game winning streak this season and the second of three straight road triumphs. For a complete recap of the win, please click here.

The Flames began their brief two-game homestand on Thursday night against Youngstown State. In a contest featuring two high-powered offenses, UIC locked down on the defensive end in the second half and put the ball in the basket just enough to pick up an 84-81 victory. Both team shot above 50 percent of the first half as the teams each surrendered leads of at least seven points before heading into the break tied at 49. YSU led by eight with just over five minutes to go, but the Flames allowed only five points and one field goal the rest of the way to snag the win. Four Flames scored in double figures led by Matthews and his career-best 28 points with five 3-pointers. For a complete recap of Thursday's victory, please click here.

Cleveland State (7-18, 3-15 Horizon League) comes to Chicago looking to snap a slight two-game skid. The Vikings fell at first-place Valparaiso Thursday night, 78-57. For a full look at that contest, please click here. CSU is paced offensively by sensational sophomore Rob Edwards. The Detroit, Mich., native is averaging a team-high 16 points per game to go along with 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Edwards is one of three Vikings to start all 25 games this season, joining Bobby Word and Kasheem Thomas.
