CHICAGO -- It's Homecoming Week at UIC and the Flames are back on campus where they will host the Youngstown State Penguins at the UIC Pavilion on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. CT. It is the second of two regular-season meetings between the two Horizon League foes.
The Flames (12-12, 5-6 Horizon League) are coming of a record-setting performance at Milwaukee on Feb. 4. UIC shot a season-high 61 percent (36-of-59) from the field Saturday, marking the first time the program has eclipsed 60 percent in a single game since Nov. 13, 2013. It was the first time the Flames hit that mark in a conference game since shooting 60.3 percent against Milwaukee on Dec. 6, 2007 and the most efficient effort overall since UIC shot 66.7 percent (30-of-45) against Butler on Jan. 29, 2005. In the second half and overtime combined, UIC shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28), and 80 percent (4-of-5) in the decisive overtime period alone.
Head coach
Steve McClain's group also achieved big things from beyond the arc. The Flames made a season-high 15 3-pointers, while shooting at a clip of 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from beyond the arc. No UIC team has made as many 3-point shots since Feb. 8, 1996, when that team matched the program record with 17 triples at Northern Illinois, a span of 648 games. The Flames have made at least 10 3-pointers four times this season and they lead the Horizon League in 3-point percentage in conference games at 37 percent.
Five UIC players scored in double figures at Milwaukee, and three of those Flames achieved career highs.
Tarkus Ferguson led the team with 25 points, just ahead of
Dominique Matthews and his 23 points.
K.J. Santos had the most prolific outing of his young career with 19 points with the help of a career-best five 3-pointers.
Michael Kolawole and
Tai Odiase chipped in with 12 points apiece. Ferguson scored 12 of his 25 points in overtime and the Belleville, Ill., native dished out a career-high 11 assists in the game. Those helpers led to 30 points for the team, meaning he helped account for 55 of the team's 105 points (52.4 percent).
Youngstown State (10-15, 4-8 Horizon League) arrives in Chicago on a two-game slide. The Flames got the best of the Penguins in the first meeting this season, outlasting their hosts in overtime, 92-89. UIC got a huge boost off its bench that evening as the second unit poured in a season-high 51 points. To read the full recap of that game,
