Covington, Ky. - UIC (28-9, 16-3 in Horizon) moved into possession of first place in the Horizon League as it split a doubleheader with Northern Kentucky at the Bill Aker Complex Sunday afternoon. The Flames won the opener, 5-3, before dropping the second game by a 6-2 margin. UIC has played five doubleheaders in Horizon League play this season, going 8-2 in those contests.
In game one,
Bowen Ogata delivered a two out, two-run single in the eighth inning to break open a close contest and give the Flames a 5-3 victory.
Mitchell Schulewitz (3-0) picked up the win in relief and
Alex Padilla earned the save.
In the nightcap, UIC recorded 13 hits but could only manage two runs in defeat. The Flames and Northern Kentucky battled to a 2-2 tie through five innings, but the Norse scored twice in the sixth and eighth innings to halt the Flames' winning streak at nine games.
How It Happened (Game One)
UIC spotted Northern Kentucky a 1-0 advantage on Jake Richmond's leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Flames tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from
Cody Bohanek. With the score tied at 2-2 in the eighth, the Flames erupted for three runs.
Thomas Norton led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
David Cronin.
Cody Bohanek walked and advanced to third on an RBI single by
Rob Calabrese. After an intentional walk to
Scott Ota loaded the bases,
Bowen Ogata slapped a single through the left side that scored Bohanek and Calabrese to extend the Flames lead to 5-2. Northern Kentucky added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Jack Andersen (2 ER/6.0 IP) posted a quality start but did not figure in the decision.
Mitchell Schulewitz allowed one hit in 1.0 IP to earn the win.
Alex Padilla closed the door on the Norse in the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.
How It Happened (Game Two)
The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on three consecutive singles by
Cody Bohanek,
Rob Calabrese and
Scott Ota. Northern Kentucky responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. UIC clawed back in the fourth inning after
Cody Bohanek walked and advanced to third on a double by
Rob Calabrese.
Scott Ota drove in his second run of the game with a groundout to tie the game at 2-2.
The Norse threatened in the fifth inning but came away empty. With the bases loaded and one out, Flames starter
Jacob Key was relieved by
Noah Masa. Masa induced an inning-ending double play to get out of jam. The very next inning Northern Kentucky grabbed a 4-2 lead on a Mike Moffat two-run homer to left field and added two insurance runs in the eighth inning.
UIC had multiple chances to put runs on the board but were unable to execute, leaving 17 runners on base for the game.

Brandon Gibis had three hits each and
Thomas Norton added two.
