CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (31-18) capped its home slate Wednesday by turning out its 12th shutout of the season against DePaul (24-18) in a 1-0 decision at Flames Field.
Â
The Flames combined for four hits with
Savannah Soppet going a perfect 2-for-2 with one walk.
Tiana Mack-Miller,
Jasmine Willis,
Kayla Wedl and
Taylor Cairns additionally added to the total as Wedl collected the lone RBI of the game.
Â
Elaine Heflin pitched five complete innings as she struck out four, walked three and allowed just one hit as she picked up her 11th win and her second shared shutout.
Allie Trudeau threw the final two frames as she earned her second-consecutive save with one strikeout, no walks and no hits allowed.
Â
DePaul scattered four runners on base before it put up its biggest threat in the fourth as a pair of UIC errors put runners at the corners, but a run-down between third and home prevented a run from scoring on the double steal attempt. The Blue Demons would then have its final nine batters of the game retired.
Â
After leaving two runners on base over the first three frames, the Flames collected the first run of the game in the fourth to take the 1-0 lead. Soppet and Willis both reached base with singles then Wedl came up to bat with one out and singled into right, allowing Soppet to score from second.
Â
Mack-Miller and Soppet would reach in the fifth on a hit and a walk, respectively, but both were left on base.
Â
UIC will head back into Horizon League play this weekend when it makes its way to Dayton, Ohio, for a three-game set with Wright State. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. CT with a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m.
