The UIC Flames (1-0-0 in exhibition play) will host the Wisconsin Badgers (0-1-0) Saturday night in the conclusion of the fall exhibition season. Kickoff from Flames Field is slated for 7:00 pm.
The Flames earned a 2-1 victory over Western Illinois Tuesday in the season's first exhibition. Following 73 scoreless minutes, the goal scoring came quickly. The Leathernecks drew first blood after working the ball down low. Five minutes later,
Abel Guzman was awarded a penalty kick. He blasted it into the net to even the score, and the Flames took the lead within just two minutes when
Jesus Perez headed a
Cristian Sanchez pass past the keeper.
Sawyer Jackman started in goal and gave way to
Sokratis Vasilas for the second half. Each keeper made one save. UIC outshot WIU 17-6, with six of the Flames' attempts coming from
Max Todd.
Wisconsin enters off a loss to Creighton in their initial preseason contest. The 14
th-ranked Blue Jays outshot the Badgers 18-7, including a 14-4 edge in the second half. Wisconsin managed just one shot on goal for the match. The Badgers were picked to finish third in the Big Ten preseason poll. Three players were named to the All-Big Ten preseason team.
The game will be a sort of homecoming for Wisconsin coach John Trask. Trask was UIC's head coach from 2005 to 2009. He led the Flames to three NCAA tournament appearances, all while current UIC coach
Sean Phillips was an assistant.
The Chicago influence can also be found up and down Wisconsin's roster. Nine Badgers hail from the greater Chicagoland area.
The teams met in an exhibition contest in 2014. Wisconsin took a 1-0 decision in that game. Previously, the Flames earned a 2-1 exhibition win in 2013.
Following the game, the Flames will have the better part of a week's worth of training before the regular season begins Aug. 25 at Butler.
