Flames Drop 60-50 Decision at Wright State

Toney Tabs Career High Blocks against the Raiders

DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC women's basketball team (7-11, 0-7 HL) dropped a 10-point decision on Friday night at Wright State (15-4, 6-1 HL). The Flames led into the late stages of the third quarter, but seven turnovers paired with seven fouls in third period plagued UIC.

Taylor Toney blocked a career-high four, doubling her previous career-best mark of two. Brittany Byrd led UIC with 16 points, and was just two rebounds shy of turning in a double-double with eight.

First Half Highlights
  • For the third-straight game, Gabryelle Johnson put in the first bucket for UIC, and Taylor Toney put the Flames up by five early with a good layup that earned an and one.
  • The home team got on the board with a pair of free throws at the hands of the League's top scorer, Chelsea Welch.
  • The Flames built a 7-2 lead, but Welch struck again, and the Raiders eventually tied it at seven apiece.
  • UIC Leading 9-7, Brittany Byrd sank a three to extend the Flames' lead to five, 12-7.
  • Tylah Lampley grabbed a big offensive board and put it in, but the Raiders got in the last points of the first quarter off a pair of freebie. The Flames owned a 14-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • The Flames lead extended to seven, 20-13, in the second quarter after a pair of layups put in by Byrd and Toney. Wright State dug its heels in and put in two of their own to trim down UIC's lead to three, 20-17.
  • Byrd put in a jumper, and a big defensive rebound from Catera Etheridge put the ball back in UIC's hands, which Toney ran back for a jumper to give the Flames a 24-17 lead.
  • The Flames lead grew to 10, but the Raiders attacked, and put in four unanswered points. UIC still held a 30-24 lead at the half.
Second Half Highlights
  • Wright State put in a short jumper in the first 30 seconds for the first points of the second half, and quickly followed it up with another jumper in its next possession to come within one basket, 30-28.
  • Catera Etheridge ended the scoring drought that was carried in from late in the first half to get the Flames on the board in the second half, 32-28.
  • The Raiders went 3-for-4 in two trips to the charity stripe to come within one, 32-31. Brittany Byrd sank her second triple of the evening, and then Wright State quickly responded with a jumper to keep it close, 35-33.
  • A costly Flames turnover was ran back for a layup to give the home team its first lead of the game, and the Raiders quickly went up by four, 41-37. The Raiders ended the third quarter with a six-point lead, 43-37.
  • The Raiders at one point led by 11, but UIC was able to get it back down to four by way of buckets from Kienya Jones, Tylah Lampley and a three from Abreanna Lake, 52-48.
  • The Flames were never able to overcome the deficit entirely, falling 60-50.

  • Tylah Lampley was in the double-digits for the fourth time in five games, scoring 12 points.
  • Taylor Toney was one point and one rebound shy of a double-double, recording nine in each category.
  • 20 turnovers for the Flames led to 19 points for the Raiders, who committed just nine miscues.
  • The two teams were evenly matched in the paint, with the Flames owning a slight 28-26 edge.
  • UIC outshot the highest-scoring offense in the Horizon League, sinking 36.5 percent of all shots to the Raiders' 32.3 percent. Wright State beat the Flames in attempts, 65-52.
  • The Flames were also a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line.
