INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC women's basketball team (7-15, 0-11 HL) could not find an answer for the Horizon League's top shooting team in IUPUI (17-5, 9-2 HL) Saturday afternoon inside the Jungle. After a relatively quiet first quarter from both sides, the Jaguars offense erupted in both the second and fourth quarters to take a 68-43 win.
First Half Highlights
- Neither team put in a bucket in the first two minutes, but IUPUI broke first, sinking a three at the 7:53 mark. Both teams continued to struggle offensively, as the next point did not come from either side until 4:41, as the Jaguars put in a jumper for a 5-0 lead.
- IUPUI extended its lead with a shot from beyond the arc, 8-0, and Taylor Toney finally got the Flames on the board with 1:05 remaining in the first, 8-2. Both teams put in a pair of free throws to end the quarter 10-4 in favor of the home team.
- Neither team was very effective from the field in the first, with the Jags shooting 21.4 percent and UIC netting 12.5 percent.
- The Flames were able to come within two by way of baskets from Catera Etheridge and Toney, but IUPUI put in its third three of the game to take the score to 13-8.Both teams forced a turnover and turned it into a layup, 15-10.
- The Jaguars continued to have success from the three-point line, and back-to-back threes quickly made it 25-12. Tylah Lampley put in a three for the Flames to help cut at the deficit, but IUPUI turned around and put in another triple, 28-15.
- The threes kept coming, with the Jags putting in another trio of threes, and Brittany Byrd was able to put one in for the Flames, but IUPUI was leading 39-22 at the end of the first half. The Jags ended the first half with nine threes, four coming off the hands of their top scorer, Danielle Lawrence.
Second Half Highlights
- Teodora Zagorac and Taylor Toney gave UIC two straight buckets to start the second half, 39-26.
- The Jaguars were up 43-28 when Danielle Lawrence's hot hands continued with another three, but Brittany Byrd responded with a pair of steals that both led to layups, 46-32.Â
- The Jaguars' next five points all came at the charity stripe, and the Flames ended the third quarter showing some aggression with two late steals, but were unable to turn them into points, 51-34.
- UIC was without a basket in the fourth quarter until Byrd was able to put in second three with 6:17 remaining; meanwhile the Jaguars lead eclipsed the 20-point mark, 58-37.
- IUPUI's lead continued to grow, and another Lawrence three made it 65-41 in favor of the Jags with just over two minutes remaining in the game.
- Byrd was able to put in the last basket for UIC, as the Flames were unable to tame the League's top shooting team, 68-43.
Facts and Figures
- Brittany Byrd led the Flames offensively with 14 points. Byrd went 6-10 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
- Taylor Toney was also in the double-digits with 12 points, while also recording six boards.
- Gabryelle Johnson led the Flames on the boards with eight. Toney's six was the Flames' next highest.
- Catera Etheridge put in six points, while Tylah Lampley netted five.
- The two teams were even in the paint, each scoring 24 points. Both benches were also evenly matched, with UIC's bench putting in nine to IUPUI's 10.
- The Flames attempted more shots (54) compared to the Jags (49), but the home team was more efficient, making 46.9 percent of all shots to UIC's 35.2 percent.
- Neither team shot above 25 percent in the first quarter, but the Jags put in solid performances in both the second (71.4 percent) and fourth (63.6 percent) quarters to surpass the Flames.
- Turnovers also proved to be a difference maker, as UIC committed 23 miscues to IUPUI's 18. The Jaguars converted those turnovers to 19 points, while the Flames turned in 12 points from miscues.
