INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time this season, UIC senior
Ryan Campbell has been tabbed as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday, March 12. Campbell, who leads the League with three wins, was also honored on Feb. 19.
Â
The Flames have claimed the conference's Pitcher of the Week Award in all four weeks this season. In addition to Campbell's two honors,
Reid Birlingmair (Feb. 26) and
Charlie Cerny (March 5) have also been recognized. Right fielder
Scott Ota has also been named Batter of the Week twice in 2018 (Feb. 19 and March 5).
Â
Campbell was brilliant in his 2018 debut at Granderson Stadium on March 10 against Chicago State. The Carmel, Ind., native threw his second consecutive complete game, this one a nine-inning shutout against the Cougars. Campbell went the distance while allowing just six hits without surrendering a run to the Cougars. The senior struck out three and issued only one base on balls. He kept the ball down in the zone and got 17 ground-ball outs, while needing fewer than 100 pitches (98) to help the Flames clinch the three-game series. He threw 72.4 percent of those pitches for strikes.
Hear from Campbell following Saturday's 4-0 win over Chicago State:
Campbell registered his League-leading third win of the season Saturday, while lowering his earned-run average to 0.87 for the year. He has allowed three earned runs in 31.0 innings pitched, but all three runs came in the fourth inning of his previous start at Georgia Tech on March 3. He began the season with 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings and has fired off 13.2 scoreless innings since the fourth frame against the Yellow Jackets. Opponents are batting .190 against him this year and he has 17 strikeouts to only three walks.
Â
The senior is slated to make his next start in the Horizon League opener against Northern Kentucky at Granderson Stadium on Friday, March 16 at 4:05 p.m. CT.
