Flames Knocked out of #MotorCityMadness by No. 10 Oakland

UIC defeated 80-46 by the Golden Grizzlies

DETROIT – The UIC women's basketball team (8-22, 1-17 HL) had its season come to a close on Friday with an 80-46 loss to No. 7 Oakland (15-15, 7-11 HL) in the first round of the 2018 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championship.

First Half Highlights
  • Oakland got out to a 13-2 lead early after an 11-0 run that included a trio of threes. The Flames were just 1-for-6 through the first four minutes of play.
  • Another triple extended the Golden Grizzlies lead, 20-6, but the Flames had a five-point surge to end the first quarter, 22-11.
  • The Flames made just 26.3 percent of their shots in the first, compared to Oakland's 42.1 percent.
  • Oakland put up five in eight seconds, after a UIC turnover led to a Golden Grizzlies trey, 28-11. Brittany Byrd sank her second three of the day, and Taylor Toney laid one up to give the Flames some offense, 30-17.
  • The Golden Grizzlies scored four, but then both offense went cold, with neither team putting in a bucket for over three minutes. Oakland ended the dry spell, and ended the first half with a 36-17 lead.
Second Half Highlights
  • Teodora Zagorac converted a three-point play with a layup and a foul shot to get things going for the Flames, but Oakland put up a three in its next possession, 39-20.
  • The Golden Grizzlies added five, but did not score again until a pair of foul shots over four minutes later. The Flames put in four in that time frame, 46-24.
  • Oakland put in a pair of threes as part of an 8-0 run to extend its lead, 56-26, and the Flames would head into the last period needing 31, 58-27.
  • Brittany Byrd and Taylor Toney combined for four points to star the Flames in the fourth, but Oakland erupted into a 6-0 run, 64-31. Tia Tedford broke up the run with a pair of free throws, but the Golden Grizzlies took eight of the next 10, 72-35.
  • The Flames fell by a final score of 80-46.
Facts and Figures
  • Brittany Byrd was back in action for the first time since Feb. 3, and returned to her usual ways, leading the Flames with 13 points.
  • Taylor Toney was the only other Flame in double-digits, scoring 10 points alongside seven rebounds and three steals.
  • Gabryelle Johnson led UIC on the boards with 10, while also netting five points and stealing three.
  • The Flames were held to just 27.4 percent shooting, while the Oakland offense netted 45.2 percent of all shots.
  • The Golden Grizzlies put in nine three-pointers, compared to just two for the Flames. UIC attempted just one more three than Oakland (25-24) and ended the afternoon just eight percent from beyond the arc.
  • The Flames were more efficient from the charity stripe, making 76.9 percent from the free throw line compared to 71.4 percent for Oakland, but the Golden Grizzlies made it to the line more, and put in more shots overall, making 15-of-21 compared to UIC's 10-of-13 showing.
  • Oakland had the advantage on the boards as well, outrebounding the Flames by a margin of 48-35.
  • The Golden Grizzlies took advantage of 25 UIC turnovers, converting them into 41 points, just over half their total. The Flames netted just 10 off 23 Oakland miscues.
  • Oakland was better in the paint 30-20, and also recorded more second chance points, 20-10. The Golden Grizzlies' bench also put in more than the Flames' reserves, 32-22.
