Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's gymnastics team recorded a season high 222.425 points, but it was not enough to overcome the top-ranked and defending national champion Michigan Wolverines.
Jody Liebler led the Flames with two second-place finishes, taking second on the vault with a 9.800 and on the horizontal bar with a 9.300. Sophomore Erin Willingham also recorded a second-place finish for UIC with a 9.550 on the pommel horse.
The Wolverines were led by Kristopher Zimmerman and Kevin Roulston, who finished one and two on the all-around with scores of 55.650 and 55.475, respectively. Scott Vetere also stood out for the Wolverines, winning three events for Michigan. He took the vault witha 9.850, the floor exercise with a 9.500 and the pommel horse with a 9.650.
The meet continued UIC's streak of hosting nationally ranked opponents. The No. 1 Wolverines won the 1999 NCAA Championship and came into Saturday's meet after posting a season-high score of 228.825 against Iowa last weekend.
Michigan will be the eighth Top 15 team to compete at UIC in January alone. Michigan has already traveled to the UIC campus once this season, competing in the Windy City Invitational where the Wolverines finished second with a score of 224.900. The Flames' new season high broke the 219.650 mark that UIC set in its season-opener against Illinois.
