Men's Tennis Tames Cougars, 5-2

Chicago, Ill. - The men's tennis team snapped their nine-match losing streak with a 5-2 victory over Chicago State at the UIC Outdoor Courts on Tuesday.

"It was nice to win," UIC men's tennis coach Chuck Cunningham said. "The guys played well enough and hard enough to get the win.

"And a `W' is what we needed."

UIC (5-13) clinched the match before even before they went to doubles play as they earned four victories in singles action.

The deciding match came at No. 4 singles when junior Wade Clark (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) came back from four games down to defeat Chicago State's Leslie Moore, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

Other singles winners for the Flames include sophomore Nick Bodmer (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Amol Desai (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South).

Bodmer earned his fourth straight victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 over Chicago State's Robert Gates.

Desai picked up his third win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Randy James at No. 5 singles.

In doubles action, freshmen Jon Schmidt (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) and Nesar Nayak (Naperville, Ill./Harper JC) teamed up at No. 1 singles to defeat Gates and Anand Mukherjee, 8-5.

UIC's No. 2 doubles tandem of Clark and Desai handed Moore and Bertrand Liger the same 8-5 fate.

UIC will travel to Indianapolis on Thursday to square off with Indiana University - Purdue University of Indianapolis at 1 PM.
