April 30, 2001

Indianapolis, Indiana - The men's tennis team placed fourth for the second straight year at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference championships at North Central High School this past weekend.

UIC opened up the weekend with a 7-0 sweep over Cleveland State in the quarterfinal match as the team lost a total of five games in singles action. Senior Jason Kerr (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) and junior Wade Clark (Farmington, Mich., Farmington) both earned 6-0, 6-0 victories over their opponents.

Other singles winners for the Flames include: Jon Schmidt (No. 1), Nick Bodmer (No. 2), Nesar Nayak (No. 3) and Amol Desai (No. 6).

UIC (7-20) was equally as successful in doubles action as the Flames received victories from Nayak and Schmidt (No. 1), Clark and Kerr (No. 2) and Bodmer and Angel Ochoa.

The Flames were not as lucky in the following matches as they fell to both Butler (4-0) and UW-Green Bay (4-1). Bodmer was the only Flame to earn a victory against UW-Green Bay as he defeated Barry Hankel, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

"It was a good tournament," men's tennis coach Chuck Cunningham said. "Obviously we're disappointed with the outcome.

"We worked hard and we came up a little short," Cunningham continued. "Now we know what we need to work on for the 2001-2002 season.
