Chicago, Ill.- A balanced showing that featured Flames victories in every non-exhibition event propelled the UIC men's and women's swimming and diving teams to blowout victories in a Horizon League dual meet over visiting Butler at the UIC Natatorium on Saturday night.
The UIC men's team posted a 134-66 win, while the UIC women's squad took a 145-67 victory.
The meet began with three-meter diving, which was highlighted by Mark Pappalardo's new natatorium-record score of 321.45. Pappalardo later won the one-meter board with a 281.40.
UIC then got things started on the swimming side with easy wins in the 200-yard medley relay before Rachel Funk and Edi Georg captured 1000-yard freestyle wins to begin the individual event domination.
Colleen Dougherty was outstanding, leading off the 200 free relay with a 24.75 50-yard free split and taking home a 200 free (1:59.39) win.
Athanasios Lamprou swam a crisp 21.55 to win the 50 free men's title. Lamprou also placed second in the 200 fly with a 53.98.
Emily Biancalana showed off her versatility with winning times in the 50 free (25.69) and the 500 free (5:28.68).
UIC Head Coach Paul Moniak tweaked his lineup for a different look and was pleased with the results.
"We juggled some things around tonight," said Moniak. "We learned that some of our athletes are very versatile, and that's a very good sign."
Other victorious performances for the men's team came from Mike Conroy (200 free/1:47.96), Dan Hare (200 IM/2:01.80), Kris Simos (200 fly/51.99) and Sean Dawson (48.27).
The women were paced by wins from Jessica Darud (200 IM/2:15.39) Kelly Hyatt (100 free/55.00), Courtney Eck (100 fly/1:02.48) and Sarah Economides (1 meter dive/227.40).
In exhibition action, Edi Georg (100 back/56.79), Dominic Barraco (500 free/4:58.94), Stefan Staev (100 breast/59.97) and the 200 free relay tandem of LeRoy Stevens, Dawson, Ari Bernstein and Barraco (1:27.30) posted top times for the men.
The UIC women's team received top times in exhibition races from Darud (100 back/1:01.12) and the 200 free relay team of Dougherty, Aisha Williams, Leslie Bustos and Laura Martensen (1:41.37).
The Flames won the first eight events against Butler on both the men's and women's sides before running the rest of the meet as an exhibition.
UIC caps off a two-meet homestand next Saturday as the Flames face St. Louis and Western Illinois at the UIC Natatorium beginning at 2:00 p.m.
