Men's Gymnastics Places Sixth in Windy City Invitational

Chicago, Ill. - Backed by strong all-around performances, Anthony May and Neal Thompson help lead the Flames to a sixth place finish at the 38th Annual Windy City Invitational in front of an electric crowd of 1,300 at the UIC Physical Education Building on Saturday night.

The host Flames showed great poise and competed well to earn themselves a respectable showing.

Freshman Neal Thompson took second place honors in the all-around competition (82.850). He also posted a team-best fourth place finish on parallel bars with a score of 14.600.

Thompson's second place finish in the all-around was the highest finish in school history.

Veteran Anthony May finished with a close .400 points behind Thompson in the all- around, taking third place (82.450). May's magnificent night was also capped with a 12th place performance on vault (15.450).

Other highlights on the night for the Flames included a tenth place finish on rings for Nikolai Korepanov scoring a 14.350.

The top team in the nation, Stanford and newcomer to this year's Windy City Invitational proved to uphold its number one ranking. The Cardinal took home their first Windy City title with a 354.450, ousting runner-up Illinois 347.350.

Last year's champion Michigan followed in at third with 344.450 and Ohio State coming in fourth with 341.400.

Minnesota came in fifth place (332.050), followed by UIC in sixth (332.050), and Iowa in seventh (331.750) rounding out the field.

Illinois took home three of the six events, with Wesley Haagensen (parallel bars), Chad Weist (floor exercise), and Daniel Ribeiro (pommel horse) garnering victories.

In the other events, Stanford's David Sender won the high bar and rings title while Minnesota's Mitchell Mays was crowned the vault champion.

UIC resumes action on January 26th with a duel meet against Iowa at the UIC PEB beginning at 5:00 p.m.
