Chicago, Ill. - Five-straight points from the No. 1 doubles team of Adriano Liccardo and Bastian Harbo created the momentum the UIC Men's Tennis team needed to knock off the defending league champions, Butler, 4-3 on Friday afternoon.
Liccardo and Harbo, facing off against the Bulldogs top pairing of Eric Breitenbach and Chris Herron, were down 7-4, but kept their composure in check to pick up five straight points, taking the match, 9-7.
Sean Kreymborg and Danny Wilson took the third doubles match 8-5, for the Flames to take the doubles point from Butler.
Kreymborg got things going for UIC in singles action, defeating Ben Shafer in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Bastian Harbo then followed suit, taking the third singles slot over Chris Herron 6-2, 6-4.
Danny Wilson played hero of the day for the Flames, winning the deciding match over Sam Brown in a 7-5, 6-4 No. 5 singles showdown.
"This was a good team effort," said head coach Hans Neufeld. ""It's always nice to knock of the defending champion, especially after them doing it to us in the past."
The Flames victory was the first time coach Neufeld has defeated Butler in his career.
Furthermore, this was the first time Butler dropped a regular-season match since 1996. The Flames ended the Bulldogs 12-year winning streak at an impressive 49 matches.
UIC will look to close out the regular season undefeated in league play on Sunday with Cleveland State at 1p.m. Before the start of the match, Hans Neufeld will honor Eric Fey and Sean Kreymborg on Senior Day.
