CHICAGO - The UIC men's tennis squad kicked off the 2009 season with a hard-fought 6-1 loss against city rival DePaul at the Lakeshore Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
In doubles play, the Flames took the third position match when Bastian Harbo and Tim O'Brien defeated Matija Palinic and Juan Xavier Munoz 8-4.
At the first position, Sebastian Lystad and Dave Robare had two match point opportunities that they could not convert on, falling to DePaul's top pairing of Austin Dorner and Ben Hartman 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Singles action had a good amount of back and forth battling between the Horizon League and Big East teams, with the Flames coming out victorious at the sixth position.
Newcomer Nate Kirk defeated DePaul's Tim Cadet 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in his first match as a Flame in UIC's sole victory.
UIC will face another Big East foe when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on Marquette next Saturday, Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. The Flames first home contest takes place at the Hinsdale Racquet Club on Jan. 23 when UIC hosts IUPUI at 7:30 p.m.
