CHICAGO - The UIC swimming & diving squads picked off perennial league powerhouse Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon, with both the men's and women's teams winning their final regular dual meet of the season by a hefty margin.
The men's squad defeated the Vikings for the first time in a dual meet during head coach's Paul Moniak's career at UIC, 132-102. The women had similar success, winning 152-81.
After celebrating the careers of the squad's three seniors, Davor Trnovljakovic, Courtney Eck and Ashley Simos' on senior day prior to the start of the meet, the Flames came out firing on all cylinders, winning the 400 medley relay by a healthy margin on both sides.
Sophomores Emily Hare (1:58.54) and Brian Anderson (1:43.78) picked up UIC's first individual wins on the day, and the first-place finishes started to pile up from there.
Other top finishers for the Flames include Cameron Seebeck winning the 50 free in a season-best performance (21.11), Brooke Sawyer in the 200 IM (2:12.13), Laurel Heath in the 1-meter (220.87) and 3-meter (219.98) and Kevin Heger in the 3-meter (262.73) diving events, Kayla Redig in the 200 fly (2:06.24), Clair Martin in the 200 back (2:06.70),and Sarah Walsh (2:27.58) and Will Ikeda (2:05.62) in the 200 breaststroke.
The seniors did not disappoint at their final meet at the UIC Natatorium, with Simos winning the 50 (24.92) and 100 (54.63) free events, Eck taking a close second in the 200 IM (2:13.92) and Trnovljakovic was the second Flames finisher in the 1000 free ((9:51.80).
The Flames now have the next two weekends to prepare for the Horizon League Championships, held in Brown Deer, Wis., February 25-28.
