CHICAGO - The UIC men's gymnastics team put forth a valiant effort against Iowa, but were unable to defeat the visiting Hawkeyes at the Physical Education Building Saturday night.
The Flames were unable to match Iowa's efforts, falling 340.200-331.050 in the squad's first home competition since the Windy City Invitational in early January.
Senior leadership was in display on Saturday as Andrew Stover lead a 1-2 punch on the high bar, taking first with a 14.000 followed by Nikolai Korepanov's second-place showing with a 13.950 performance. Stover placed second on the parallel bars (14.450) while Korepanov earned a runner-up finish on the rings (14.650).
Neal Thompson, the lone all-around competitor, finished the evening with an 80.550 score.
"I thought that we performed well, even while we were short-handed," said assistant coach Charley Nelson. "When we are back competing at home in a few weeks at full strength, we will be right on track."
The team posted season-best scores on the rings (57.500) and parallel bars (56.900) against the Hawkeyes.
The Flames take to the road the next two weekends, beginning with Michigan on Saturday, February 13th at 7 p.m. Central.
