WEST POINT, N.Y.- UIC senior Andrew Stover will make his school-record third consecutive trip to the NCAA all-around finals on Friday, headlining a crop of four Flames who will make event finals appearances at the 2010 National Collegiate Men's Gymnastics Championships hosted by Army.
Stover became the first UIC gymnast to advance to three consecutive Division I all-around finals. He scored an 83.550 all-around tally in Thursday's qualifier to earn the historic finals nod.
Also advancing to event finals and the chance to compete for All-America status are senior Nikolai Korepanov on high bar, junior David Mohr on pommel horse and freshman David Ishida on parallel bars.
Korepanov just missed on out advancing to the still rings finals after what was still a solid performance in his signature event on Thursday.
The Flames concluded their season as a team with a 333.450 score in Thursday's first national qualifying session. The performance will put UIC at No. 11 in the final national rankings.
Other great news for the Flames that transpired this week centered around the UIC coaching staff. Legendary head coach "CJ" Johnson was named the 2010 NCAA East Region Coach of the Year, and veteran assistant Charley Nelson was selected as the NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
