Men's Basketball's Paul Carter Granted NCAA Waiver

Sept. 28, 2010

CHICAGO - The UIC men's basketball program received some great news recently when senior transfer Paul Carter was granted a legislative relief waiver by the NCAA, allowing him to participate in all basketball-related activities with the Flames this season.

Carter is a versatile 6-8, 203-pound forward who played a key role as the sixth man for Tubby Smith at Minnesota the past two seasons, helping the Golden Gophers reach a pair of NCAA Tournament berths by averaging 5.8 ppg and 4.0 rpg in 15.5 minutes in 63 games.

The Little Rock, Ark. native will be able to play immediately this season as a graduate student/post-baccalaureate participant under NCAA Bylaw 14.1.9.

One of the newest Flames transferred to UIC with one year of eligibility remaining to be near his sister Bria who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, last winter.

"Paul is mature beyond his years," said UIC head coach Howard Moore. "He has been chosen by me as one of our captains and I expect him to do extremely well in that role for the Flames."

Carter and the Flames tip off the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 10 on the road against Pittsburgh as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. UIC will open the home slate on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. versus Roosevelt at the UIC Pavilion.
