IOWA CITY, Iowa - Despite season-best performances across the board, the UIC men's gymnastics team was unable to defeat host Iowa, falling 342.100-329.300 at the UI Fieldhouse Saturday evening.
The Flames improved upon team totals on the rings, vault and high bar set at last weekend's season opening Windy City Invitational, but were unable to close the gap the Hawkeyes created from the third and fourth rotations.
"The team took a positive step forward tonight," said head coach Charley Nelson. "While Iowa made the most of their home opener and pulled away on vault and rings, we improved our team score by over two points from last week at the Windy City. We're still shorthanded, but these early showings are a good sign of where we will be when the reinforcements come."
Sophomore expertise lead the way for UIC on Saturday, as Kyle Voissem and Dan Zerbel took runner-up honors on their respective events. Voissem improved a full point from his season opener, placing second on the rings with a 14.600 tally while Zerbel put on a 14.100 performance on the floor.
Senior David Mohr tied for third with Mateusz Rybarski on the pommels with a score fo 13.800, an improvement from Rybarski's 13.500 performance last weekend.
Alex Bymaster improved in four events to tally a 79.600 in the all-around to lead a trio of Flames competing in all six events, with Joseph Hodges (79.600) and Ned Kamimura (77.000) rounding out the UIC-only field.
The Flames enter an idle week before returning to the heartland to face Nebraska and Oklahoma in Lincoln on February 3.
