Men's Tennis Defeats Detroit At Home, 5-2

March 25, 2011

HINSDALE, Ill. - The UIC men's tennis team won the doubles point, and took four out of the six singles matches to secure their first win in the Horizon League Friday afternoon over Detroit, 5-2.

"Great effort in doubles plays with a sweep of the Detroit Titans," said head coach Hans Neufeld. "The energy carried over into singles play winning four out of six matches. {Alexander} Raa, {Nate} Kirk, and {Luiz} Gonzaga all won both their singles and doubles matches. It was a good team effort with all nine players contributing in the win."

UIC (3-9, 1-1 Horizon League) took an early lead in the match, by sweeping all three doubles matches. Senior Gonzaga and freshman Raul Kamath won the first doubles match over Detroit's Nick Tolomei and David Stabley in the No. 3 slot, 8-2. To secure the doubles point for the Flames was juniors Kirk and Scott Shepardson defeating Detroit's Chris Cheun and Cesar Escobar Serrano in a close one, 8-6. In the top doubles position, freshman Raa and junior Dave Robare won a fierce battle over Detroit's Alex Latosinsky and Pablo Nunez, 9-8 (5).

Sophomore Gautham Oroskar set the tone for the Flames in singles play, securing his first collegiate win over Detroit's David Stabley in the No. 6 position with ease, 6-1, 6-1. Following in his teammates lead, junior Nate Kirk defeated Detroit's Tolomei in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Senior Luiz Gonzaga secured the match for the Flames with a victory over Detroit's Serrano, 6-3, 7-6. Despite dropping the first set in the top singles flight, Raa crawled back to defeat Detroit's Latosinsky, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 10-2.
