COLUMBUS, Ohio - The UIC men's gymnastics team opened the NCAA championships with a solid performance during the first session of the NCAA Qualifier at St. John's Arena on the campus of Ohio State University Thursday afternoon.
The Flames finished fifth out of six teams in the session, edging out Air Force with a final team tally of 340.000-339.700. Oklahoma (363.500), Illinois (356.000) and Penn State (356.000) earned the top three spots to advance on to the team final competition tomorrow evening.
Kyle Voissem led the UIC trio of all-around competitors with a final tally of 86.400, followed by Neal Thompson (84.950) and Joseph Hodges (81.100).
Hodges would go on to place 11th on the pommels with a score of 14.050, while Aaron Eyster tied for 18th on the vault (15.450).
Voissem would pace the Flames on floor with a 10th-place, 14.800 performance as well as on the high bar after a 13.950, 16th place showing in the first of two qualifying sessions. The sophomore would have his highest showing of the day with a third-place finish on the parallel bars (15.400).
With the conclusion of the second session Thursday evening, Voissem will compete in the all-around finals on Friday night, while Hodges (pommel) and Thompson (rings & parallel bar) will move on to the individual event finals on Saturday.
