CHICAGO - Volleyball player Maggie Strus has been named the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of Sept. 17-23. The sophomore helped her team tally an unblemished record in the opening weekend of Horizon League play, defeating Valparaiso and Wright State at home. Strus averaged 5.88 digs per set in those two matches, totaling 47 overall.
On Friday, Strus began the weekend with 25 digs against the Crusaders as the Flames took the match in four sets (25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24). Against WSU on Saturday, the Hickory Hills, Ill., native recorded 22 digs in a 3-1 triumph over the Raiders (25-10, 25-12, 20-25, 25-6). Strus now ranks fourth in the Horizon League in digs per set with an average of 4.88.
Strus becomes the third consecutive volleyball player to be named UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week as teammates Janise Dismuke and MaryKate Imrie garnered the accolade on Sept. 12 and 19, respectively.
