CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's gymnastics teams held their annual Mixed Pairs intersquad meet Sunday afternoon. Team four consisting of Nikki Woodruff, Chelsea Bailey, Chris Root, Michael Brackman and Chris Avvisati earned the top spot, while second place went to team two (Emily DeCesare, Katie Snyder, Giulia Hindermann, Jason Gaides, Pratik Patel and Alex Dumstorf).
Senior Gabby May was solid on all four events, scoring 9.60 or better on each apparatus. Senior Chelsea Bailey tied May for first place on floor, earning a 9.70 while red-shirt senior Kim Randall earned the top score for the women on vault with a 9.80.
"Gabby May was very solid on all four events and looks like she is ready to have another great year," women's gymnastics head coach Peter Jansson said. "All of our seniors hit at least one great set as Tamara Moten hit beam, Citlali Cuevas bars, Chelsea Bailey floor and Kim Randall hit vault and bars."
For the men, senior Jason Gaides was the top performer, earning a 14.60 on vault and a 13.70 on both rings and high bar, finishing with an all-around score of 82.5. Senior Brett Valin also shined on vault, earning a second-place score of 14.20 for his performance. Sophomores Chris Root (13.40) and Alex Dumstorf (12.70) also competed on vault while Jacob Thurber collected a score of 12.90 on both the pommel horse and parallel bars.
"We competed in front of a standing room only crowd inside the practice gym for the first time in more than a decade," men's gymnastics head coach Charley Nelson said. "We received great fan support from a number of student-athletes, including swimmers, divers, softball players and members of UIC's spirit squad."
"I am excited for this team's potential in 2015 and the Mixed Pairs was an opportunity to see that potential," Nelson continued. "Our pre-season training was successful in terms of general skill development and we will focus on executing those new skills over the next six weeks."
The men's and women's squads begin the regular season Friday, Jan. 9 as they host a dual meet against Illinois and Northern Illinois, respectively. Competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT at the UIC Pavilion.
