CHICAGO - The UIC swimming and diving program competed on Saturday and defeated the Valparaiso Crusaders inside the Flames Natatorium. The men won with a final score of 171.5-115.5 and the women followed suit, 162-115.
The men's swimmers finished with a total of nine individual victories. Sebastian Ostrowski led the way with two of his own coming in the 100 back (51.00) and 200 IM (1:56.07).
Christian Grobe and Kei Ishimaru each grabbed a victory with Grobe's coming in the 1000 free (9:53.78) and Ishimaru's in the 200 fly (1:52.70). Tanner Alms took the 200 free (1:43.29) and Nathan Bosse notched first in the 200 back (1:56.27).
John Mordach and Mike Reed captured victories in the 100 breast and 50 free, respectively. Mordach clocked in at 59.02 and Reed at 21.00. Vince Errichiello took home first in the 100 free (46.91)
The 200 medley relay team of Peter Errichiello, Brayden Amendola, Ostrowski, and Reed walked away with a first place finish (1:33.11). Connor Howard took first in the three-meter dive (311.70) and one-meter dive (313.98).
The women earned eight individual victories with Sophia Shalabi setting the pace with two of her own. She touched the wall first in the 100 breast (1:06.59) and 200 IM (2:14.15).
Brianna Hines captured first in the 200 fly (2:07.17) and Veronica Gibson took first in the 1000 free (10:48.08). Erin Sivak finished in first in the 200 back (2:18.88) and Claire Haggerty did the same in the 200 free (1:56.72). Erika Martinez notched a first place finish in the 50 free finishing with a final time of 25.02. Whitney Johnson grabbed first place in both three-meter dive (289.25) and one-meter dive (305.25).
The Flames will be back in the pool next week as the women compete against Youngstown State at the Flames Natatorium on Friday (Jan. 23) followed by the UIC Diving Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 24).
