Final Results
MINNEAPOLIS - The UIC men's gymnastics team took on the Minnesota Gophers and Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday evening at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis. The Flames finished with a season best 402.80, falling short to No. 10 Minnesota (429.90) and No. 9 Nebraska (422.050).
"Our goal was to increase each score by .2 so then we could potentially have an overall score that was 4 to 6 points better than before," said Nelson. "I am happy with what they did as a team tonight."
Senior Jason Gaides accumulated a total of 82.95 points in the all-around competition and finished in first place. On pommel horse, Gaides led his teammates with a score of 14.10, securing third-place in the event. He recorded a score of 14.40 on rings, which was good for sixth-place.
Teammate Brett Valin competed in all-around competition tallying an 80.75, which was good for second-place. Valin also competed on vault, recording a score of 14.45 and tied for fifth-place. He also led UIC in scoring on parallel bars with a score of 14.10.
Alexander Dumstorf led the team on parallel bars with a score of 13.60. Keith Kohn also had a dominant performance on vault tallying a 13.70.
"Each meet we give out what we call the `game-ball' given to the man of the competition and the entire team got it tonight," said Nelson. "The team stuck together and really represented the school well. We also had a nice crowd of UIC fans here in Minnesota which was great for our guys."
The Flames return to action on Feb. 14 when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple. Competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
