ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The UIC men's gymnastics team traveled to take on No. 4 Michigan Saturday afternoon inside Cliff Keen Arena. The Flames completed their final competition of the regular season and fell short to the Wolverines, 443.150 - 401.750.
"Solid day for the Flames today," said UIC head coach Charley Nelson. "I am incredibly proud of what these guys did in front of a Michigan crowd."
The Flames began competition on the pommel horse as senior Jason Gaides notched a team-best score of 13.950. He also competed on vault and scored 14.200. Gaides collected a total score of 82.000, taking second place in the all-around competition.
Trent Jarrett and Gaides both notched a score of 13.700 on parallel bars, which was good for fifth-place. On floor, Alexandar Dumstorf recorded a team-high score of 14.150. Casey Mahoney-Muno competed in his first meet at Cliff Keen Arena and recorded a score of 14.000 on floor exercise.
Senior Brett Valin collected UIC's best high-bar score of 13.700 and finished in fourth. Valin finished the all-around competition with 74.000 points.
"We have some work to do in the next few days to prepare for the ECAC Championships and fight for that title," said Nelson.
The Flames return to action next weekend (March 27-28) when they travel to West Point, N.Y. to compete in the ECAC Championships.
