YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC men's tennis team (6-11, 2-3 HL) dropped a 6-1 decision Saturday at Youngstown State (8-11, 4-1 HL). The Flames captured the doubles point but could not pick up a win in singles play.
"We came out with good intensity in both doubles and singles play," said UIC head coach Hans Neufeld. "Youngstown State played well and is a very good team."
Eric Pontow and Maurizio Feoli collected their first victory in two tries at the No. 2 position. The duo defeated Remi Chancerel and Silviu Mistreanu by a 6-4 score.
Christopher Cole and Mitch Granger won their third consecutive match at the No. 3 spot. The pairing secured a 6-4 victory over Bassem El Mekawi and Hugo Morth. Cole and Granger are tied for the team lead with four doubles wins.
Cole and Max Cederkall both forced their singles matches into three sets but could not come away with a win. Cole competed at the No. 2 position for the tenth time this season and fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Cederkall played at the No. 6 spot for the third time and dropped a close 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 decision.
UIC concludes its Ohio trip and the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. CT matchup at Cleveland State (15-7, 3-2 HL). The Vikings defeated Valparaiso by a 4-3 score Saturday afternoon.
