CHICAGO - The men's gymnastics team recently raised funds and awareness for pediatric brain tumor research by participating in the 13th Annual Run for Gus 5K. The charity event was held on Thursday, July 23 at Diversey Harbor in Lincoln Park.
The Flames' program cares deeply about supporting pediatric brain tumor research. UIC participates in the Team Impact program and the Flames' "teammate" last year, Beckett Ryba, lives with an inoperable brain tumor. Kyler Reddick, the son of former UIC student-athlete Carey Reddick, passed away last year at three years old after his fight with recurring brain tumors.
Five current Flames (Casey Mahoney-Muno, Jacob Thurber, Trent Jarrett, Alexander Dumstorf, Christopher Root), two alumni (Lexi Brown and Lukasz Adamczyk), head coach Charley Nelson and supporters of the program ran in the event. Mahoney-Muno was UIC's best finisher in 45th place (20:36).
ABOUT RUN FOR GUS 5K
Young Associates Board's (YAB) 13th Annual Run for Gus 5K Run/1 Mile Walk is named after Gus Evangelides, who passed away from a malignant brain tumor at the young age of 21 months. Supporters of Run for Gus make a difference in the lives of thousands of children afflicted with brain tumors by funding research into the causes and treatment of pediatric brain tumors. YAB is proud to carry on the lifesaving work of the Gus Foundation. Established by Gus' family and friends, the foundation raised more than $4 million for pediatric brain tumor research before closing its doors in 2006.
