CHICAGO - The UIC men's gymnastics team heads into its first co-ed meet of the season on Sunday when it welcomes No. 10 Iowa to the UIC Pavilion at 2 p.m. CT. Competing alongside their fellow Flames will be the women's gymnastics team; set to host N.C. State for their first home meet of the season.
Both the Flames and the Hawkeyes return to the Pavilion after completing the 46th annual Windy City Invitational last Sunday (Jan. 17), where the Flames ended in sixth with a total score of 374.250. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes finished in fourth place with a running total of 419.650.
Trent Jarrett led UIC on the rings with a stuck routine that earned him a 13.350. Teammate Alexander Dumstorf was a team best on floor with a 14.050, and with the top score of 13.350 on parallel bars was Christopher Root. Keith Kohn came in on vault with a 13.500 and finished the meet with an All-Around score of 75.550.
"We were absolutely better at Windy City, but the Flames have more fuel in the tank that we haven't yet shown. I haven't had a full line-up yet, either, and that will make a difference," said head coach Charley Nelson.
Last season at Iowa City, the Flames fell to the Hawkeyes, 428.600-398.600, but not without bringing home highlights from the competition. Last year's senior Jason Gaides won the All-Around with a score of 84.100 and led the Flames on floor, pommels and high bar. Brett Valin won the vault for the Flames with his top score of 14.900.
"We still won't be at full strength, but we should be giving the Hawkeyes a better run for their money this weekend," added Nelson. "They're a talented group, but so are the Flames."
