RESULTS
CHICAGO- The UIC swimming and diving teams concluded their first competition of the regular season on Saturday at the University of Chicago. The Flames competed in a quad meet alongside the Maroons, the Northwestern Wildcats and the Olivet-Nazarene Tigers at the Myers-McLorraine Pool within the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center.

The men's team captured victories against Chicago (156.00-135.00) and Olivet Nazarene (132.00-130.00) but fell to Northwestern by a score of 214.00-168.00. Likewise, the women's team earned victories over Chicago (192.00-135.00) and Olivet Nazarene (104.00-83.00), but came up short to Northwestern (250.00-234.00).

"Our first meet of the year is always a learning experience and that's exactly how we used this meet," said head coach
Tim Loeffler. "We are excited with some of the results and look forward to our next competition."

Junior Brianna Hines captured second place in both the 1000 yard freestyle (10:25.40) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:00.44). At last year's competition, Hines's time of 10:03.49 in the 1000 yard free set both the pool record at the Gerald Ratner Athletics Center as well as the UIC record.

Fellow junior Sophia Shalabi netted a first place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.92) and earned second place in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:24.70). Freshmen Misha Neal and Jessie Stangret earned fourth place finishes in their college debut; Neal in the 100 yard freestyle (53.68) and Stangret in the 100 yard backstroke (58.49). Â

In his first career collegiate meet, freshman Aaron Guo grabbed first place in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:34.87. Sophomore
Connor Homans finished first in the 50 yard freestyle (21.46) followed by freshman
Joseph Dalesandro who finished in third (21.57). Â Dalesandro also captured a second place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.62.

In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the men's A team, comprised of Homans, Dalesandro, junior
Max Pohl and senior Nick Kowaleski grabbed first place with a time of 3:06.92. The women's A team, including Hines, Neal, Shalabi and junior Marisa Savegnago finished third in the same category with a 3:36.15.

On the boards in the three-meter dive, sophomore
Sean Scarry scored a team high of 289.43 followed by senior
Tyler Pastore who notched a 278.55. Katy Knight led the way for the women's team with a score of 216.98.

UIC will be back in the pool on Friday (Oct. 28) for their home opener against Boston College beginning at 5 p.m. (CT) inside the Flames Natatorium.
