UIC Sweeps Boston College in Home Opener

The Flames triumphed over the Eagles Friday evening

CHICAGO- The UIC swimming and diving teams concluded their first home competition of the regular season on Friday inside the Flames Natatorium. Both teams earned victories over the Boston College Eagles; the women scored a 178-116 while the men tallied a 171-129.

"Our team really stepped up today," said head coach Tim Loeffler. "Our freshmen acted like veterans and our upperclassmen led us to victory."

On the boards in the three-meter dive, sophomore Sean Scarry scored a team high and NCAA zones on three qualifying score of 331.28, qualifying him for the NCAA zones on three meter; Senior Tyler Pastore followed notching a 282.60. Katy Knight led the way for the women's team with a score of 230.63 which earned her first place in the one-meter dive, meanwhile sophomore Natalie Williams took fourth after scoring a 195.98.

The women's swim team had an eventful day taking first place in 13 out of their 15 respective events. In the 200 yard medley relay, the women's A and B teams captured first and second place with a final time of 1:46.79 and 149.19, respectively. 

Brianna Hines, one of the Flames' top performers of the evening, took first place in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:13.63), the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.90) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:02.95). Freshman Natalie Lammers came in close second behind Hines in the 1000 yard freestyle with her time of 10:46.31.

Fellow freshman Jessie Stangret netted two first place finishes; first in the 100 yard backstroke (58.55) and later in the 200 yard backstroke (2:05.35).  Junior Sophia Shalabi followed suit earning the top spot in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:05.52) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:23.70). 
    
Freshman Misha Neal took two first place finishes back-to-back, first in the 50 yard freestyle (24.50) followed by the 100 yard freestyle (53.00).  Claire Haggerty scored a win for the Flames in the 200 yard IM (2:09.68) before the women closed out the meet with a final win in 200 yard freestyle relay (1:38.65).

The men found themselves tied halfway through the night, but came through with some top notch performances. The men's A team placed first in both the 200 yard medley relay with their time of 1:34.51 and the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:23.91). Freshman Joseph Dalesandro earned back-to-back first place finishes in both the 50 yard freestyle (21.40) and the 100 yard freestyle, while fellow freshman Michael Tegeler earned the top spot in the 200 yard backstroke (1:51.38). 

Freshman Danny Sivak grabbed first in the 200 yard breaststroke after finishing with a time of 2:08.90. Junior Max Pohl netted first place finishes in both the 100 yard butterfly (50.75) and the 100 yard backstroke (51.93), followed by freshman Joseph Gibson whose 4:42.11 finish earned him first in the 500 yard freestyle.  

"We have some tough meets coming up, but I'm confident in how we race," said Loeffler. 

UIC will be back in the pool to host Green Bay, Oakland and Wright State in its first conference meet of the season on Friday (Nov. 4) beginning at 5 p.m. (CT) inside the Flames Natatorium.
