CHICAGO- The UIC men's and women's gymnastics teams held their annual Mixed Pairs exhibition meet on Sunday afternoon in the Gymnastics Room of the Physical Education Building. Team 2, consisting of Riley Cholod, Serena Baker, Abby Hasanov, Tyler Ball, Steen Haugsted and Casey Mahoney-Muno took home the top spot amongst the five total teams.
Sophomore Jenna Squillo had the top score on the vault for the women (9.825) followed by senior Nikki Woodruff and sophomore Mikailla Northern who both earned a 9.800. On the uneven bars, junior Riley Cholod, from team 2, scored a team best of 9.875; senior Nicole Szabo was second best with a 9.85.
Freshman Daniela Maciel was best on the balance beam for the women with her high score of 9.85. Squillo and Northern followed suit with their scores of 9.800 on the apparatus. The women wrapped up on floor where sophomore Allison Broad, from team 4, notched a team high of 9.800, while Woodruff and Squillo each tallied a 9.750.
For the men, freshman Satchel Hudson earned the top score on floor (12.800) followed by senior Alex Dumstorf who notched a 12.600. Senior Chris Root was best on pommels for the men with his score of 12.600 while fellow senior Jacob Thurber posted a 12.200. Root and freshman Steen Haugsted tied for the top spot on the still rings earning a 13.200 on the event.
On the vault, freshman Victor Bello led the way for the Flames with his top score of 14.000. Fellow freshman Asad Jooma tied with Hudson for second, behind Bello, with their score 13.500 followed by Dumstorf's 13.400. Hudson also tied for the top spot on the parallel bars alongside freshman Basil Szechinski with their scores of 12.100; Hudson was also best on the high bar after notching an 11.500.
Both programs will open the regular season in January; the women will travel to take on Michigan State on Jan 6, while the men prepare to host their annual Windy City Invitational on Jan. 14.
