CHICAGO- The UIC men's gymnastics team heads into its final home competition Sunday, when it welcomes Arizona State to the UIC Pavilion at 2 p.m. (CT). Travis Burke, Japheth Grimes, Trent Jarrett and Scott Poort will be recognized in a Senior Day ceremony.
"The Sun Devils are a strong team and it's going to take every tenth to secure a win. We'll be without Keith Kohn for a second week and Dumstorf has been out with the flu," said head coach Charley Nelson. "Missing those two guys is going to hurt, but we're going to come out fighting in front of our home crowd."
UIC returns to the Pavilion after coming in second (372.450) in a tri-meet with No. 3 Minnesota and MSU Club Team on March 6. The Gophers finished in the top spot with 438.350 points, while MSU Club scored 163.100.
Jarrett's score of 13.850 was good for fifth on rings, as junior Alex Dumstorf and Jarrett led the Flames on p-bars with their score of 13.600. Burke broke his personal record of 13.500 on floor when he tallied a 13.700; Jacob Thurber and Dumstorf tied for a team best on the event with their 14.300 final.
"It's going to be bittersweet to see the seniors compete at home for the final time," said Nelson. "Those guys have worked so hard and we've really been through a lot together. Trent, Travis, Jay, and Scott have been great leaders and teammates, but I also know they'll be moving on to great things."
