UIC Concludes Regular Season Play

CHICAGO- The UIC men's tennis team (10-11, 2-4 HL) ended the regular season with a 4-3 loss Sunday afternoon to Youngtown State (7-13, 3-3 HL) by a score of 4-3. The Flames earned the sixth seed of the upcoming Horizon League Championship (April 29-May 1).

"We played well to get the doubles point," said head coach Hans Neufeld. "We competed well in singles but couldn't close it out."

Seniors Mitch Granger and Christopher Cole teamed up at the No.1 spot to defeat opponents Hugo Morth and Matthew Kritzinger, 6-4. At No.3 , senior Max Cederkall and freshman Marcelo Dib secured the doubles point for the Flames after defeating Yossi Dahan and Bassem El Mekawi by the same score.

In singles, Granger defeated Morth, 7-5, 6-4 to collect his 11th win in dual play at the No. 4 position. He concluded Horizon League play with a team-high of four wins.

Dib collected the second singles win for the Flames at the No. 3 spot after downing opponent Luke Purser, 7-5, 6-4. Dib owns a team-best of 13 wins in dual play and has an overall record of 16-8.

Cederkall was down 5-2 in the second set and came back to push his match to three sets at No. 5. Despite his best efforts, Cederkall fell by a score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 to Youngstown's El Mekawi. Cederkall owns 11 wins in dual play, eight of those wins have come at the No. 5 spot.

The Flames now prepare for the Horizon League Championships, which takes place April 29-May 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. inside the Varsity Tennis Center.
