Men's Tennis Returns to Action with Saturday Doubleheader

Eastern Illinois and Indiana On Tap for Twin Bill

The UIC men's tennis team will be in Bloomington, Indiana Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader.  Action will begin at 2:00 when the Flames take on the host Indiana Hoosiers, then at 6:00 UIC will match up with Eastern Illinois.

The Flames are searching for their first win of the spring season, after dropping their first two matches two weekends ago.  Christian San Andres won a singles point at #5 against DePaul, which turned out to be the only point the Flames would win in falling to the Blue Demons and to Western Michigan.

Carl Hedstrom pushed his #1 singles counterpart from DePaul to a third set, as did Marcelo Dib at #3 singles.  Dib and William Wale won their doubles match earlier in the day.  Against the defending MAC champions and NCAA tournament participant Broncos, UIC had less success as they were swept in doubles and lost all six singles matches in straight sets.

Indiana jumped out to a 2-0 start this season with a sweep of Bryant and Dartmouth last weekend.  In their 4-0 win over Bryant, the Hoosiers swept the doubles matches and dominated the singles portion of the competition, winning three matches by scores of 6-0, 6-1; 6-0, 6-2; and 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the victory.  They topped Dartmouth 6-1 in a more competitive match.  IU took two of three doubles matches, and was pushed to three sets in four singles matches.  Antonio Cembellin, Bennett Crane, and Zac Brodney each won two singles matches on the weekend.

Saturday's match will be the first meeting between UIC and Indiana.

Eastern Illinois (0-2) is coming off an opening weekend in which they won just one match in two outings.  They fell to Saint Louis 6-1 before being blanked by Ball State, 7-0.  Marko Janjusic won a singles point against the Billikens at number 6.  Gage Kingsmith and Freddie O'Brien captured the #1 doubles match against St. Louis.

UIC and Eastern Illinois squared off last year at Hinsdale Racquet Club, and the Flames came away with a 6-1 victory.  The Flames swept the doubles matches and took five out of six singles matches.  Carl Hedstrom and Marcelo Dib each took two matches on the day, as they teamed up to win #2 doubles and then took down the Panthers' #1 and #5 singles players, respectively.
