Gymnastics Programs Preview 2017-18 Season with Mixed Pairs

Both programs begin competitive season in January

CHICAGO – The UIC men's and women's gymnastics programs gave fans a preview of what's to come in the 2017-18 season on Sunday afternoon with their annual Mixed Pairs exhibition meet.

Team four consisting of Daneila Maciel, Alli Broad, Kayla Baddeley, Sam Montague, Wes Diveney and AJ Hardin came out victorious at the end of the afternoon, with an average of 21.64, followed closely by team three (Katie Snyder, Toni Alicke, Ashley Albrecht, Sam Forbes, Tyler Ball, Michael Peluso, Zach Traylor) in second with a 21.62 average.

Women's Highlights
  • Newcomer Kayla Baddeley and junior Mikailla Northern grabbed the top score on vault, 9.800, and Alli Broad recorded a 9.750 on the event.
  • On bars, Northern was joined by sophomore Toni Alicke on the top, both earning a 9.750.
  • Northern notched a 9.800 on beam for her third team-high of the afternoon, while Baddeley, Daniela Maciel and Riley Mahoney each earned a 9.750.
  • Northern's highest score as well as the team's highest of the afternoon came on floor, a 9.900. Broad also had a strong showing on the event with a 9.800.
Men's Highlights
  • Freshman Sam Montague led the way for the men on floor, with a 13.400. Sophomore Satchel Hudson was the next closest finisher with a 12.400.
  • On pommel horse, sophomore Michael Peluso grabbed the top score with a 12.400, while newcomer Colin Schwartz followed with an 11.900 on the apparatus.
  • Hudson brought in a 12.900 on rings for the event's top score. Sophomore Tyler Ball recorded a 12.600, and junior Wes Diveney and Schwartz both tallied a 12.400.
  • Montague earned his second team-high of the afternoon, matching teammate Asad Jooma with a 13.500 on vault. Diveney also turned in a solid performance with a 13.300 on the event.
  •  Parallel bars saw Ball come up big with a 13.300 for the top score, with a three-way-tie between Schwartz, Taylor Styer and James Strevey (12.100) for second place.
  • Jooma was the highest scorer on high bar, bringing in a 12.500. He was followed closely by Peluso (12.300), Styer (12.200) and Hudson (12.200).

  • The women's team begins the competitive season on the road with a tri-meet at Northern Illinois alongside NC State. The meet is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. CT.
  • The men's squad will open up the competitive slate by hosting the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Chicago's Navy Pier.
