Fresh off its first dual match victory of the season, the UIC men's tennis team (1-3) will look to put together a winning streak during a doubleheader against Elmhurst (0-0). The action will start at 5:30 pm, and will continue immediately after the first match is over with a 7:30 scheduled start time for the nightcap.
The Flames split a doubleheader last Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., falling to the host Indiana Hoosiers 7-0 before finishing strong with a 5-2 win over Eastern Illinois. UIC swept EIU in the doubles competition, and got a fast start in the singles matches. Freshmen
Niko Wasilewicz and
Kailash Panchapakesan each won in straight sets, and classmate
Christian San Andres did likewise to clinch the match.
Marcelo Dib found himself in a tighter match but pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 victory for UIC's fifth and final point.
It was the first singles win of the season for Wasilewicz, Panchapakesan, and Dib. The four singles and three doubles wins represented more than UIC got in its previous three matches combined.
Elmhurst will have one match in the books, a dual against Judson scheduled for Friday night, before hosting the Flames. They competed in the ITA Regional Championships last fall, where Jackson Lindquist got two wins and Kyle Endicott advanced to the round of 64.
The teams squared off last season, with UIC coming away with a 7-0 victory.
Carl Hedstrom,
Nate Campanile, and Dib each won their singles matches in straight sets. The Flames swept the doubles matches. Hedstrom and Campanile teamed up at #2 and earned a 6-4 win. UIC also downed Elmhurst in 2014-15 by a 7-0 score.
Following Saturday's matches, UIC will have almost three weeks off before returning to action in the Horizon League opener against Valparaiso Feb. 24.
