Five men's tennis players were in action in the singles qualifying draw at Day One of the ITA Midwest Regional held at Notre Dame on Thursday.  Four of the five Flames advanced to the second round.  The going got tougher at that point, as three of the four faced seeded players, and none of the four made it out of round two.

Singles Highlights

• Johan Hedstrom began the day with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Wisconsin's Alan Sweet.  Hedstrom pushed the #9 seed, Cleveland State's Ben Slade, to three sets before going down 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2.
• Niko Wasilewicz was a three-set winner over Francisco San Andres of Marquette, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.  Michigan State's John Carlin ended Wasilewicz' day, 6-4, 7-5.
• Anthony Nguyen bounced back from a lackluster first set to take down Bor Muzar (Northern Illinois), 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5).  #4 seed Peter Kuszynski out of Western Michigan knocked Nguyen out of the bracket, 6-3, 6-4.
• Pelle Strandberg made quick work of NIU's Erich Schuette, 6-0, 6-2, before Vince Anzalone from Toledo shut him down, 7-6 (1), 6-3.
• Kasper Parlklo was the lone Flame not to make it out of the first round.  He was a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victim to Notre Dame's Paul Gota.

• Three Flames teams - Wasilewicz and Strandberg, Hedstrom and William Wale, and Parlklo and Nguyen - will compete in the main draw.
