Illinois State Sweeps Flames

Dib and Wasilewicz Shine Again at #1 Doubles

Box Score Competing on the road against a tough Illinois State team, UIC lost its second match in as many days, 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Doubles Results
  • Head coach Hans Neufeld reconfigured his doubles pairings for the second time this weekend.  Kailash Panchapakesan made his season debut on the doubles courts.  Teamed with Marco Nanni on the #3 court, the pair fell, 6-3.
  • The mainstays at #1, Marcelo Dib and Niko Wasilewicz, won their set for the second day in a row, 6-4.  "Niko and Marcelo had a solid win again at #1 doubles," Neufeld said.
  • In a winner-take-all set on the #2 court, Johan Hedstrom and William Wale dropped a 6-4 decision and Illinois State took the doubles point.
Singles Results
  • The Redbirds got two more quick points on the #5 and #6 courts.  Nanni, playing down a court from his spot in the lineup to date at #5, lost 6-0, 6-1.  When Wale was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at #6, ISU was one match away from clinching the team victory.
  • The home team got that fourth point on the #2 court, where Hedstrom was a 6-3, 6-1 victim.
  • Wasilewicz gave it his best shot in the #1 flight, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-3.
  • Dib, playing in the #3 slot, won the first set 6-4.  After dropping the second set by the same score, he was outlasted in the tiebreaker, 10-4.
  • Panchapakesan wrapped things up for the Flames.  Like Dib, he won his first set by a 6-4 margin.  Unfortunately, also like his teammate, he couldn't close out the match and was a 7-5, 10-6 victim down the stretch.
  • "Kailash and Marcelo competed well, even though both came up just short in the third set tiebreaker," Neufeld said.
Up Next
  • After playing two matches in two days, the Flames will have to be ready to play twice in the same day.
  • A split doubleheader is on tap for Saturday.  Crosstown rival Chicago State is up first, at 1:00 pm at H-F Racquet Club.
  • In-state foe Eastern Illinois will lie in wait for a 6:00 pm match at Hinsdale Racquet Club.
