Flames Welcome Davidson for Home Opener

Season's First Home Match Scheduled for Saturday in Hinsdale

The UIC men's tennis team will go for its first win of the season in its first home match of 2018, when it hosts Davidson at Hinsdale Racquet Club Saturday evening at 7:00.  It will be the first of two matches this season at Hinsdale, which is one of the Flames' indoor homes.

Please Note: Davidson's team arrived in Chicago despite the snowstorm, and the match will begin as scheduled Saturday night.

Service
  • Marcelo Dib and Niko Wasilewicz won their #1 doubles set last weekend, becoming the first team to defeat Marquette's Verdu and Meyers.
  • Dib and Wasilewicz won the Horizon League's Doubles Team of the Week award following their victory.
  • That win represents the Flames' lone doubles set win of the dual season; however, Johan Hedstrom and Marco Nanni racked up three wins en route to their doubles championship at the River Forest Collegiate Invitational.
Return
  • Hedstrom and Nanni, and Alvaro de la Fuente and William Wale, each came close to a doubles win last weekend, but both teams lost on a tiebreaker by identical 7-6 (7-5) scores.
  • Kailash Panchapakesan had multiple chances to claim a victory in his #5 singles match.  After winning the first set, he went to a tiebreaker in the third, which ultimately ended 18-16 in favor of Marquette's Greg Anderson.
Winner
  • UIC's lineup saw a couple of changes from the first dual match to the second.  Dib and Hedstrom swapped the #2 and #3 flights.  De la Fuente dropped a notch to #6 as Panchapakesan made his first appearance of the dual season.
  • Wasilewicz at #1 and Nanni at #4 were the lone holdovers across the first two matches.
Last Time Out
  • The Flames dropped a 7-0 decision at Marquette last Sunday.
  • After the hard-fought doubles point, which Marquette took on two tiebreakers, the Eagles took three straight-set singles wins to clinch the match.
  • The home team closed out the match by sweeping the singles points, but not before Panchapakesan pushed his opponent beyond the brink in the final match of the day.
Scouting Davidson
  • Davidson earned a dramatic 4-3 win over East Carolina last Saturday, thanks to a 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win by Jack Riazzi in the final singles match.
  • After losing the doubles point, Davidson won three straight singles matches, but couldn't close out the win until Riazzi's #5 match.
  • Shamael Caudhry is the Wildcats' #1 singles player.  He sports a 2-1 record in dual matches.
  • Thomas Mason boasts a sparkling 4-0 record, split between the #4 and #5 flights.
