Flames Claim 6-1 Win Over Purdue Northwest

Team Takes Five of Six Singles Matches

UIC got back in to the win column with a 6-1 victory over Purdue Northwest Friday afternoon.  The win, which snapped a two match skid, saw the Flames rack up five singles wins in straight sets.

Doubles Results
  • Head coach Hans Neufeld shook up his doubles pairings.  Niko Wasilewicz was moved down to give the #3 flight a boost, and teamed with William Wale, earned a 6-1 win.
  • Kailash Panchapakesan, who was part of the Flames' only doubles team to get a win last weekend, was elevated to the #1 court.  Paired with Marcelo Dib, the two clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
  • Johan Hedstrom and Marco Nanni, reunited at #2 after playing with different partners for a handful of matches, were foiled in their attempt to pull off the sweep, 6-4.
  • "We competed and communicated well" in the doubles sets, Neufeld said.
Singles Results
  • Nanni was the first singles player to wrap up his match.  He was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at #4.
  • On the #5 court, Panchapakesan had almost as easy a win as Nanni.  His 6-0, 6-2 victory put the Flames one win away from clinching the team win.
  • Hedstrom delivered the fourth and decisive point, taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision on the #2 court.
  • Alvaro de la Fuente got his first win of the season.  He took down his opponent 6-1, 6-4 at #6.
  • Wasilewicz was pushed to a second set tiebreaker, but came away with the win to take the #1 match, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
  • Dib was a tiebreaker away from a win and a Flames clean sweep on the #3 court, but Purdue Northwest salvaged the point with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-5.
  • "It was a solid singles effort all the way down the lineup," Neufeld concluded.
